A Long-term Global Comparison of IMERG and CFSR with Surface Precipitation Stations

As the Integrated MultisatellitE Retrievals for- Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) (IMERG) products are expected to be available at least until mid-2030, it is highly desired that an extensive spatio-temporal comparison of IMERG done in-situ level have guidance on potential usage, especially for hydro-climatic applications in data-scarce conditions. For reference, we selected widely popular CFSR precipitation and compared both (IMERG CFSR) with monthly time-series accessed from global stations National Oceanic Atmospheric Adminstration (NOAA). This was made over 2001–2020 extent 5 geographical regions, 7 continents, 105 countries ~ 50,000 surface using standard metrices like NSE, VE, KGE, R, RMSE PBIAS. has a satisfactory good simulation rainfall majority countries, outperforms Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR). Precisely, found Europe (VE = 0.61), North America (0.56) Australia unsatisfactory observed other continents CFSR. At country levels, 64 reveal significantly better mean NSE IMERG. Considering value automated access latest data hydrologic modelling, quality IMERG, this study also introduces public web service: Worldwide Weather Service (W3S) preprocessing dissemination use modelling. The outcomes guide water resources managers these datasets sustainable management.
